South Korea's democratic system is prone to populist tendencies. It's still better than was expected.
The country is in search of a new development paradigm. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for ancestors as and gender-specific family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. There are indications of a secularist culture trend forming.
Origins
During prehistoric times, the ancestors of modern Koreans lived by hunting and gathering wild food. About 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. They also raised livestock, and also made furs. These people formed tribal states one after the other in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also established a metallurgy industry, producing iron tools, including bronze. They traded with other nations and introduced block printing to Japan, as well as art styles as well as a written language and papermaking.
Gojoseon was founded in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. The state adopted Chinese culture that included Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. Goryeo, who ruled from 918 to 1392 CE established the Hangul alphabet that was based on the shapes formed by the mouth when it was pronounced. In 1145 CE the Samguk Sagi or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was first recorded.
The evolution of Korea
The Korean peninsula was habitable from Neolithic times onwards. Early evidence of human settlements can be found in the form of cist graves lined with stone, and decorated with precious items such as amazonite jewelry being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures, referred to as dolmens, built from enormous single stones, are common throughout the country.

The peninsula was then under the control of a variety of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE) which included Baekje and Goguryeo. After the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states arose in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Baekje, the most powerful of these states was weakened by the Goguryeo's fall (676 CE) and was left with only its southern regions in Manchuria and the the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo, and the Gaya confederacy, flourished for a short period of time.
The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to work together to expand their territories. In the final phase, Silla, with significant Chinese aid, conquered the other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.
As Korea is entering the post-crisis phase the development paradigm of the country is in flux. Those who are appalled by the enormous cost of the old system are urging an extensive program of liberalization in capital as well as labor markets. On the other hand the supporters of the old system attempt to keep it alive through nationalist sentiments, as well as by stoking fears of job losses.
Analysts and academics are divided about the extent to which Korea's development is being driven by these two trends. This article assesses the latest developments by analyzing five phases of Korea's political development: the illiberal democratic period (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) and authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001) and democratic participation (2002 to present). This article also highlights key factors that seem to influence these processes.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made progress in promoting their views to this segment. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that nearly three-quarters of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of the respondents, 41% stated that there was insufficient evidence from science to support the theory 39% of respondents said that the theory contradicted their religion and 17% claimed it was difficult to grasp. This level of disbelief is comparable to that of the United States, where a similar percentage of people do not accept that humans evolved from earlier types of life.
In the past, the anti-evolution campaign in Korea focused primarily on educating students and the introduction of Christ to them. A significant rise in interest in creation science began in 1980, with a four-day seminar held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the keynote speakers. This event drew an impressive crowd of scientists, professors, and church leaders.
The event's success resulted in the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31 in 1980. The inaugural event was widely reported in national newspapers, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and also received wide attention.
KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, in which it reported on its activities and also published articles on scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated film strips and slides from ICR as well as some books on creationism which were already published outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures at universities and churches throughout the country.
One instance of a KACR success story was at the KAIST university in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were interested in creationism, they raised money and got funding to construct a small museum dedicated to creation on campus.
In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine, CREATION. This magazine covers topics in the field of creation science. It also sponsored a series lectures by ICR staff. It has also established a network of local branch offices that offer seminars and talks to schoolchildren and community groups.
Changes in South Korea
In the latter half of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other fashion elements imported from abroad. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by jazz and rock & roll. During this time, the famous samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, were popular with the public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the beat of shaman drummers and other instruments of music.

The economic crisis has formed Korea's new development paradigm. The main challenge for the new regime is the balance between the state-led economic policies and market-based ones. It also involves rethinking the incentives, monitoring, and disciplining strategies that have been a part of the system before the crisis. These issues are addressed in Chapters 3 & 4.
Baekje was founded by Onjo the prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo was founded by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo, and other areas and also by a migrant from northern China. Baekje was a major regional power in the 4th century extended its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do south. This meant that it was constantly in conflict with Goguryeo, and the Chinese commanders on the border.
The decline of Silla in the late 8th and 9th centuries allowed strong local factions to emerge. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He controlled a part of today's Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.
The rule of his was, however, short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla and later joined Baekje into Goryeo peacefully as a successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms, and strengthened the centralized ruling system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually became powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
